Emma Stone & Chris Pine’s New Movie Gets Release Date & Other Details

Universal Pictures has officially set a release date for the upcoming romantic comedy starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine. The studio confirmed key creative details about the project, which reunites Stone with her longtime collaborator behind the camera.

The Catch sets release date

Universal Pictures has set the romantic comedy The Catch, starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine, for release on May 21, 2027, according to Deadline. Dave McCary will direct the two-hander rom-com. Plot details remain under wraps.

Patrick Kang and Michael Levin wrote the original spec script. Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig penned the most recent draft. Stone considered several projects for the fall before turning her attention to The Catch. Pine joined the cast soon after, and the film became a go for later this year.

Shawn Levy and Dan Levine produce through 21 Laps, with Michael H. Weber also producing. Stone, McCary and Ali Herting produce through Fruit Tree, which signed a first-look deal with Universal after the studio landed the film in 2024. Robin Fisichella executive produces. Universal’s Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell oversee the project for the studio.

The Catch joins a pre-Memorial Day weekend slot that also includes Paramount and Blumhouse’s revival of the Paranormal Activity franchise. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s Bad Fairies, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ncuti Gatwa, will also release that weekend.

Stone recently earned her fourth Oscar acting nomination for her lead role in Bugonia. She also picked up a Best Picture nomination as a producer on the film. Stone became the first woman to land Oscar nominations as both actress and producer on two different films, repeating the feat she first achieved in 2024 with Poor Things.

Pine recently starred opposite Jenny Slate in the romance film Carousel, which premiered at Sundance this year. He will also appear in the Zellner Brothers’ sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang alongside Cate Blanchett, Dave Bautista, Lily Rose-Depp and Lea Seydoux. McCary made his feature directorial debut in 2017 with Brigsby Bear.
