Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, & MCU Star Team for Western Movie

Critically acclaimed director Park Chan-wook is readying his next film, and it is going to feature a star-studded cast.

What do we know about Matthew McConaughey’s next movie?

According to a new report from Deadline, Park Chan-wook’s new film, The Brigands of Rattlecreek, is assembling an absolutely packed cast. Deadline notes that Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei (who previously appeared in Park’s Decision to Leave) have all joined onto the project to star in it.

The movie, which will be directed by Park, will come from an original screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk). Deadline‘s report notes that the film is a Western thriller. The movie will follow the story of “a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.”

Much like Park’s other films, Deadline notes the movie will tackle themes of revenge, retribution, memory, family, and more. For Park, this marks the culmination of a decades-long desire to make the movie. Deadline’s report mentions that the project first popped up almost 20 years ago, with the script originally making the Black List at some point. Park had been trying to make it for some time, but now has finally assembled the cast to do so.

The movie is set to be on sale at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, which Park was also announced to be the President of the festival’s jury for this year. Park’s previous film, No Other Choice, was critically praised, but earned no Oscar nominations, with many calling it one of the biggest snubs of the year.

McConaughey’s latest role came in 2025’s The Lost Bus, while Butler was last seen in 2025’s Caught Stealing. Pedro Pascal will next be seen in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu and Avengers: Doomsday, while Tang Wei last starred in 2024’s Wonderland.
