Murder, She Wrote Release Date Delayed for Jamie Lee Curtis Gets Movie

Universal Pictures has quietly reshuffled the calendar for its highly anticipated Murder, She Wrote adaptation, steering Jamie Lee Curtis’ big-screen mystery debut away from one of Hollywood’s most competitive release windows.

Murder, She Wrote movie gets an early 2028 release date

Universal Pictures has moved its Murder, She Wrote movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis to February 4, 2028, Deadline reports. The studio previously dated the film for December 22, 2027. Universal believes the new date offers better playability for this type of movie outside the Christmas window.

The shift pulls the film away from a crowded 2027 holiday season. Specifically, that window includes Disney/Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, New Line’s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Lionsgate’s The Housemaid’s Secret. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ untitled Nancy Meyers movie and Sony Animation’s Buds also occupy that stretch. As of now, no other major studio titles currently sit on the new February 2028 date.

On the creative side, Jason Moore is attached to direct the feature adaptation of the Emmy-winning series. Meanwhile, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the writing team behind Dumb Money, wrote the script. Amy Pascal will produce alongside Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Aditya Sood through Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal Pictures.

Notably, the producing team arrives fresh off success with the Amazon MGM sci-fi film Project Hail Mary. That title has grossed over $147 million worldwide at time of reporting. Plot details for the Murder, She Wrote feature still remain under wraps.

For the uninitiated, the original Murder, She Wrote ran on CBS for 12 seasons from 1984 to 1996. Angela Lansbury starred as Jessica Fletcher, a retired schoolteacher turned mystery writer who solved real-life murders. The series earned 41 Emmy nominations, with Lansbury nominated each year it aired. She never won but later reprised the role in four television movies.
