This May Movie Is Predicted to Overperform at the Box Office
Miranda Priestly would not be bored by the latest predictions for The Devil Wears Prada 2 at the box office. Over the last two months, the much-anticipated sequel to the original 2006 classic has continued to receiver higher and higher projections, as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci have been jet-setting around the world for the movie’s press tour. More than several box office experts have remarked on the film’s forward momentum and fantastic pre-sales. Yet even with this recognition, prediction markets for the Disney and 20th Century Studios film believe that it will have a breakout box office start. The Devil Wears Prada 2 heads toward its theatrical release next week on May 1, 2026 in the US.
Bets on The Devil Wears Prada sequel think it will have a blowout box office opener
A bet on Polymarket believes that The Devil Wears Prada 2 will have an extraordinary box office domestic opener from May 1 to May 3. As of April 23, 35% of betters think it will earn over $100 million in that time period, while another 35% (effectively, a tie) believe it will amass somewhere between $90 million and $100 million.
Looking at the history of the market, it’s pretty much a tossup as to which one of these two predictions have had the lead over the last few weeks or so. Either way, this range of $90 million to $100+ million is slightly higher than the $85 million to $100 million projection from BoxOffice Pro and the $70 million to $105 million range from BoxOfficeTheory.
As for the other results of the bet, 23% aren’t as confident in the film’s box office performance and believe its domestic weekend numbers will fall in the range of $80 million to $90 million. Only 8% think it will earn less than that. This is an incredible outcome given that back in March The Devil Wears Prada 2 was only projected to get $55 million.
If the comedy-drama sequel is able to reach the $100 million mark in its domestic opener, it would land in second place behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s $131 million in terms of films that have been released in 2026. By comparison, Project Hail Mary earned $80 million, Scream 7 had $63 million, and Hoppers made $45 million.
Thus far, there are no official numbers or even a reported figure for The Devil Wears Prada 2’s production budget. There are rumors that it’s somewhere between $100 million and $150 million. That said, even if its budget falls along the high end of this range, the film’s high box office predictions will most likely mean that the sequel will still be very profitable in the long run.
Since The Devil Wears Prada 2 is targeted toward a female-driven audience, it won’t have too much competition against other films despite a crowded month in May. Mortal Kombat 2 releases on May 8, while The Mandalorian & Grogu comes out on May 22, both of which are action flicks. Also, while Deadline notes that this sequel has multi-generational interest from women over 25, there is still enough male interest that it will appeal to casual moviegoers too. Other movies coming on May 1 include Animal Farm, Two Pianos, Hokum, and Casa Grande, but this sequel is still expected to dominate over this Mother Day weekend.
It should be noted that a recent survey conducted by Fandango placed The Devil Wears Prada 2 in third place for the most-anticipated summer movies this year, between The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, showing that casual fans are very much aware of the film and want to see it.
