The Super Mario Galaxy Movie received middling reviews from critics upon its release, and Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto recently shared his thoughts on the response. Shigeru Miyamoto found The Super Mario Galaxy Movie backlash ‘strange’

While speaking with Nintendo Dream, the game industry icon noted that the film critics’ negative reviews of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie surprised him.

When asked about the critical reception to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie mirroring the low ratings for 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie from critics, Miyamoto said, “The situations are similar, aren’t they? Actually, I thought the critics’ reviews of the first film were understandable. But I thought this time it would be different…and it was even harsher than last time, which I found strange.”

Despite being a box office hit, having taken in over $755 million worldwide so far, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has largely garnered lacklustre reviews from movie critics, and its score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes currently sits at 43%.

However, fans seem to disagree with the critics, giving the Super Mario sequel a Popcornmeter score of 89%. Miyamoto is also aware of the divide and acknowledged that the general audience has given rave reviews for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

“Judging from the reactions of those who have already seen it, it’s been well received by Mario fans,” he noted. “It’s a movie made by people who truly love Mario, so it’s being well-received in Japan as well. Another thing is that even people who haven’t seen the previous film, or even people who don’t know Mario, will be able to enjoy it as a movie much more than the last one.”
