Avengers: Endgame Would’ve Been Very Different With Jon Favreau’s Idea
Jon Favreau had a very different vision for how Tony Stark’s story should have ended in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Mandalorian and Grogu director and Happy Hogan actor revealed he made a direct appeal to Marvel Studios over the fate of the character he helped bring to life in Avengers: Endgame.
Jon Favreau wasn’t happy about Iron Man dying in Avengers: Endgame
Jon Favreau revealed he opposed Marvel Studios’ decision to kill Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
The filmmaker confirmed he contacted directors Joe and Anthony Russo to express his concerns about the character’s fate. Favreau told host Jimmy Kimmel, “I don’t think people, I don’t know if people are going to, I don’t know, I think it’s going to really impact people because there were kids that grew up with that character.”
Favreau directed the original Iron Man in 2008 and fought to cast Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role against Marvel’s initial hesitation. He acknowledged that despite his reservations, the Russos handled the scene with care. Favreau said, “It was handled so well by them, and Gwyneth and Robert did such a wonderful job acting, and I think it added a poignancy to it.”
The director also reflected on the emotional weight the moment carried for audiences who grew up with the franchise. Favreau recalled the audience reaction during Endgame, stating that half the theater had tears in their eyes. Kimmel pointed out that Iron Man was essentially Favreau’s creation, telling the director, “That’s your baby that they killed.”
Favreau played Happy Hogan across multiple Marvel films and credited his decision to cast himself in the first Iron Man as a career-defining move. He joked, “The smartest thing I ever did was give myself a cameo in that first one in the Iron Man because that thing put my kids through school.”
Downey Jr. now returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom, a completely different character from Tony Stark. Favreau expressed enthusiasm about the transition, telling Kimmel he looks forward to seeing Downey Jr. take on the new role in the franchise’s next chapter.
