This Actress Could Win 2 Oscars in 2027 in an Academy First

No one has done it in Oscars history, but Sandra Hüller has a shot at winning both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the same year at the 99th Academy Awards in 2027. Early predictions for next year’s Oscars, which will take place on March 14, has the German actress in contention to win in both acting categories, a feat that no one — neither man nor woman — has yet to accomplish. Hüller’s only Academy Award nomination was for Best Actress in 2024’s Anatomy of a Fall. That said, we’re not even halfway through 2026 yet, so it’s important to take these early Oscars predictions with a grain of salt. Still, this initial wave of support for Hüller, which includes her role in Project Hail Mary, goes to show her incredible range and impressive performances this year.

Sandra Hüller could win Best Actress and Supporting Actress at 2027 Oscars

Sandra Hüller ranks at the top of the list to be nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 2027 Oscars in two bets on Kalshi.

As of April 21, she has a 54% chance to earn a Best Lead Actress nomination for her role as the soldier Rose in the movie of the same name, with Renate Reinsve in second with a 51% chance to be nominated for her performance in Fjord. On the flipside, though, Reinsve currently holds the top spot to win the category at 26%, though Hüller is not far behind at 19%.

For Best Supporting Actress, Hüller has a 48% chance to be nominated for her role in the upcoming film Digger, which stars Tom Cruise and is directed by Oscar-favorite Alejandro Iñárritu. For this category, her main competition is with Anne Hathaway who has a 42% chance at being nominated for her performance in Verity.

Hüller received early recognition this year for her portrayal of the titular character in the German film Rose, which was shown on February 15 at the Berlin International Film Festival. Taking place in the 17th century, the movie follows Rose as she pretends to be a male soldier who claims to be the heir to an estate. Critics have given the film an outstanding 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Vulture saying that this is “her greatest role yet” and The Hollywood Reporter stating that “it becomes impossible to imagine any other actor nailing the part.”

As for Digger, her role is largely unknown (at the time of writing). That isn’t too surprising since the upcoming dark comedy is expected to release on October 2. Hüller was not allowed to say anything about what her character is about, opposite Tom Cruise’s Digger Rockwell, in an interview in early April with Collider. The only thing the actress has been able to disclose is that she has seen the film, and she thinks it will be “very surprising” and is “absolutely unique.” Given how little we know about the film, it’s remarkable that she’s already a favorite for Best Supporting Actress.

If Hüller is nominated in both categories at the 2027 Oscars, she will join a small but distinguished company. Only a dozen actors and actresses have been nominated for an Oscar in both acting categories in the same year. The most recent was Scarlett Johansson in 2019 for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, followed by Cate Blanchett in 2007 for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I’m Not There. Other stars who have accomplished this feat include Jamie Foxx (2004), Holly Hunter (1993), Emma Thompson (also 1993), Al Pacino (1992), Jessica Lange (1982), and Sigourney Weaver (1988).

Meanwhile, thirteen actors and actresses have won an Oscar in both acting categories in separate years, notably Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Maggie Smith, Denzel Washington, and Gene Hackman. Hüller has the potential to add her name to this list in one fell swoop.
