Top Gun 3 Update Is a Disappointing Setback for Tom Cruise Movie
Top Gun 3 is officially in the works at Paramount, but the latest update on the Tom Cruise movie will disappoint fans.
Last week at CinemaCon, Paramount announced Top Gun 3 is in development, with Cruise set to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, is penning the script for the third movie. Jerry Bruckheimer will also produce.
What is the latest Top Gun 3 update?
One of the key members of Top Gun: Maverick’s success may not be able to return due to scheduling conflicts. According to Puck’s Matthew Belloni, Top Gun 3 producers are “prepping for the likelihood” that Joseph Kosinski will not return to direct.
Kosinski, who helmed Top Gun: Maverick, plans to shoot two movies next: a U.F.O. thriller for Apple and the Miami Vice reboot for Universal. Belloni wrote that filming on Miami Vice depends on Michael B. Jordan, who is rumored to star alongside Austin Butler. Jordan still has to turn in his Thomas Crown Affair remake that he’s directing for Amazon. Miami Vice is dated for August 6, 2027.
Meanwhile, Cruise has not announced his next film. He will be busy later this year promoting Digger, the upcoming black comedy from Alejandro G. Inarritu. Paramount would “love” for Cruise to work on Top Gun 3 next.
“So the studio and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have begun approaching talent agencies for directors, should Kosinski bow out as anticipated,” Belloni wrote in his Puck newsletter.
As for who might join Cruise in the cast, Miles Teller and Glen Powell have been linked to return. Teller played Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, and Powell portrayed Jake “Hangman” Seresin.
In 2022, Paramount released Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to 1986’s Top Gun. Top Gun: Maverick became a smash hit, grossing $1.5 billion worldwide. The film received six Oscar nominations and won for Best Sound.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary, Top Gun and its sequel return to theaters May 13 for one week only.
