Five years after its premiere, Jenna Ortega’s critically acclaimed psychological teen drama has seen a resurgence on streaming. The film explores a harrowing tale of a high school student who navigates her life in the aftermath of a school tragedy.

The Fallout finds streaming success on HBO Max

As per Flix Patrol’s April 20 report, The Fallout, starring Jenna Ortega, is currently the #5 film on HBO Max’s Top 10 in the United States list. The film has been on the Top 10 for a few days now. Last week, on April 16 and 17, it claimed the top spot. But by the end of the week, it had fallen to #7. However, it rose two ranks this week, indicating a steady comeback among HBO Max subscribers.

Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen’s Dust Bunny is currently leading the streaming charts. It is followed by The Mummy, Ballerina, and The Devil Wears Prada.

Marking her feature directorial debut, Megan Park wrote and helmed The Fallout. She is known for her on-screen appearances in projects such as The Moodys, Once Upon a Prince, Imposters, and The Neighbors.

The story centers on high school student Vada as she struggles to process her emotions in the aftermath of a school shooting. Although she is physically unharmed from the tragic incident, she becomes depressed. Slowly, she begins to disconnect from her family and friends. Meanwhile, she bonds with Mia, a schoolmate she hid with in the bathroom during the shooting. Together, the two resort to various ways to cope with their shared trauma.

Wednesday star portrays Vada Cavell in the film. The rest of the cast includes Maddie Ziegler as Mia, Julie Bowen as Patricia, John Ortiz as Carlos, Will Ropp as Nick, Niles Fitch as Quinton, Lumi Pollack as Amelia, and Shailene Woodley as Anna.

The Fallout premiered at the 2021 South by Southwest on March 17, where it won multiple awards. It later debuted on HBO Max on January 27, 2022. During that week, the film reportedly became the #1 film not only on HBO Max, but across all streaming services in the United States, per Media Play News.

Critically, the film connected with both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a Tomatometer score of 90% and a Popcornmeter score of 83%.
