Tom Cruise recently announced that Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, will be rereleased in theaters soon. The films’ return to cinemas gives fans who missed out on their original premieres a chance to check them out on the big screen. Both movies proved to be massive box office successes at the time of their release.

Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick return to theaters next month

Tom Cruise took to social media to announce that Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick will rerelease in theaters on May 13, 2026, and will play for a week. This coincides with the former’s 40th anniversary.

“Two films. One big screen. Back in theaters, May 13th, for one week only,” he captioned the post.

Top Gun originally premiered in theaters on May 16, 1986. It garnered mixed critical reception following its release, with praise for the visuals and soundtrack but criticism of the script and its military propaganda. Nonetheless, the film became a major commercial hit, grossing an estimated $357.4 million worldwide.

The story follows Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise), a young naval aviator, who, along with his best friend and radar intercept officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), gets the opportunity to train at the United States Navy’s Fighter Weapons School or Top Gun, based out of Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. During his time there, he clashes with other pilots, including the calm Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer), due to his recklessness.

In addition to Cruise, Edwards, and Kilmer, the film features Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, John Stockwell, Tim Robbins, and Meg Ryan, among others.

Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick flew into theaters on May 27, 2022. It made an estimated $1.5 billion at the global box office.

Set 30 years after the original, it follows Mitchell, who trains a group of young Top Gun graduates, including Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his late best friend, for a dangerous mission. Besides Cruise and Teller, the movie stars Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, and Monica Barbaro.
