Sir Patrick Stewart’s Comedy Movie With Abysmal 6% RT Score Is Leaving Netflix

A 2017 animated film featuring the voice of Sir Patrick Stewart is scheduled to leave Netflix’s library next month. Although the film failed to garner a positive rating on review-aggregator sites, plenty of moviegoers still went to theaters to watch it, making it a commercial success.

The Emoji Movie will not be a part of Netflix’s streaming catalog from Friday, May 8, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).

Tony Leondis directed the film with a script he co-wrote with Eric Siegel and Mike White. In a 2017 Screen Rant interview, Leondis said that he was a fan of Toy Story and wanted to make a film based on a new toy that hadn’t been “explored yet.” At that moment, he received a text with an emoji, which led him to think, “Emojis are the new toys, they’re the toys of the 21st Century.”

The Emoji Movie’s story takes place in Textopolis, the digital world inside a middle school boy’s smartphone. It follows Gene, a “Meh” emoji who believes he has a greater purpose because he can express multiple emotions. With the help of Jailbreak and Hi-5, he embarks on a journey to learn the meaning of his existence.

Sir Patrick Stewart voices the character “Poop.” Meanwhile, the rest of the voice cast features T.J. Miller as Gene, James Corden as Hi-5, Anna Faris as Jailbreak, Maya Rudolph as Smiler, Steven Wright as Mel, Jennifer Coolidge as Mary, Christina Aguilera as Akiko, and Sofía Vergara as Flamenca, among others.

Sony Pictures Animation animated The Emoji Movie, with Sony Pictures Releasing handling the distribution. The film premiered worldwide on July 28, 2017, opening to harsh reviews from both critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a mere 6% critic approval rating and a 36% user rating. Similarly, on Metacritic, it has a critic score of 12 and a user score of 2.2. Consequently, it became the lowest-rated animated film on the site. 

While the film did not fare well critically, the box office numbers tell a completely different story. Produced on a reported $50 million budget, it went on to gross $217.7 million at the global box office.
