J. K. Simmons’ Psychological Music Movie Vanishes Soon From Netflix

The psychological drama starring J. K. Simmons will be leaving Netflix very soon. Helmed by Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle, the film centers on a young, ambitious musician who undergoes intense training while enduring psychological pressure from his teacher.

Whiplash leaves Netflix in May

The 2014 musical drama Whiplash will not be a part of Netflix’s library starting Friday, May 1, 2026.

J. K. Simmons and Miles Teller headline the film as Terence Fletcher and Andrew Neiman, respectively. They are joined by a supporting cast that includes Paul Reiser as Jim, Melissa Benoist as Nicole, Austin Stowell as Ryan, and Chris Mulkey as Frank, among others.

Whiplash follows the story of Andrew Neiman, a young jazz drummer enrolled at the prestigious music conservatory in New York. Soon, he catches the attention of the school’s conductor, Terence Fletcher, known for his relentless, abusive teaching style. Using brutal methods, Fletcher pushes Andrew to the edge to achieve perfection. However, it takes a massive toll on Andrew’s life.

Damien Chazelle turned his original script into an 18-minute short film of the same name. He made it in collaboration with Blumhouse Productions and Whiplash Productions, LLC. It was showcased at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and received widespread praise. Following its success, Right of Way Films and Blumhouse Productions helped the La La Land director turn the short film into a feature film.

Subsequently, Bold Films joined as a co-producer, financing the film for $3.3 million. Reportedly, Chazelle shot the film in just 19 days, with production days lasting up to 18 hours, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Furthermore, despite being involved in a car crash during filming, he returned the following day to complete the shoot.

Upon release, the film received an overwhelmingly positive reception, became a commercial success, and even won multiple awards. Both the critics and audience gave it an approval rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, it went on to earn over $50.4 million at the global box office. Furthermore, it won three Oscars, including one for J.K. Simmons under the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role category.
