The Mummy: How Scary & Gory Lee Cronin’s New Horror Movie Is Revealed

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is out in theaters now, and with Cronin being no stranger to scary movies and extreme practical effects, many are wondering just how scary and gory his latest movie is.

Is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy scary?

Fans of Cronin’s work shouldn’t be too surprised to hear that, while not filled with jump scares, The Mummy does feature some scary moments. The film, which stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, May Calamawy, May Elghety, Natalie Grace, Shylo Molina, Billie Roy, and Hayat Kamille, features some tense atmosphere and scares, but relies much more on overall shock value and body horror to get a reaction out of the audience.

The movie follows the story of a family whose young daughter is kidnapped one day, but is found eight years later inside a sarcophagus, only to display some disturbing behavior. It feels in line with a movie out of the Evil Dead series, which should come as no surprise given Cronin’s love of the series and his previous work on 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. These comparisons also shine the truest when it comes to how gory the movie is.

How much gore is in Lee Cronin’s The Mummy?

Where Cronin’s new movie really elevates itself in horror standing is in just how gory the movie gets. The Mummy takes “body horror” to the extreme and includes many moments where you might want to look away. Without getting into too much detail, some of the standout moments of the movie include scenes involving a nail clipper, a scorpion, and a child trying to pull out their own teeth.

Much like Evil Dead Rise, Cronin doesn’t shy away from showing some of the more visceral gags right to the audience. While light in the “scare” department, this will still have you looking away from the screen, albeit out of shock instead of fright.

The movie is written and directed by Cronin, who is best known for directing 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, the fifth film in Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise. Before that, Cronin also made 2019’s The Hole in the Ground, while he’s now attached as an executive producer to the next two Evil Dead movies: Evil Dead Burn and Evil Dead Wrath.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is out in United States theaters and IMAX now.
