Gears of War Netflix Movie Gets Exciting Update From Deadpool 2 Director
The long-awaited Gears of War movie at Netflix finally received an exciting update from its director.
David Leitch, who directed Deadpool 2, has been attached to helm the Gears of War movie for almost a year. Jon Spaihts is penning the script. However, no start date has been announced, nor have any casting updates been shared.
While speaking with Collider, Leitch shared a positive update about the status of the Gears of War movie. Judging by his comments, Netflix is motivated to make this video game adaptation happen.
What is the latest Gears of War Netflix movie update?
“Gears of War, I think, is going to happen,” Leitch said. “We have a great draft that’s in progress that’s in really great shape. The studio’s more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it’s all lining up that that movie will happen.”
The next video game in the franchise, Gears of War: E-Day, is expected to be released sometime in 2026.
In November 2022, Netflix announced plans to adapt Gears of War into a feature film. Netflix partnered with The Coalition, the developer behind the franchise, to snag the game’s media rights. The announcement came on the 16th anniversary of the first Gears of War game, which was released on November 7, 2006.
Netflix’s Gears of War announcement included plans for a live-action movie followed by an adult animated series.
Gears of War is set on a planet where humanity faces extinction. Sergeant Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad are tasked with fighting the Locust, underground reptilian creatures that threaten the future of the human race.
As for Leitch, the former stunt coordinator-turned-filmmaker first broke out as an uncredited director on John Wick. Leitch then went on to helm 2017’s Atomic Blonde, 2018’s Deadpool 2, 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw, 2022’s Bullet Train, and 2024’s The Fall Guy.
Leitch’s next movie, How to Rob a Bank, opens in theaters on September 4, 2026.
