Children of Blood and Bone debuts trailer at CinemaCon

Director Gina Prince-Bythewood unveiled the first trailer for Children of Blood and Boneduring Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The filmmaker brought stars Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Regina King to the stage. Prince-Bythewood’s latest project marks her first film since 2022’s The Woman King.

The film takes place in an African fantasy kingdom where a young woman goes on a quest. Mbedu plays the lead character fighting to reclaim magic violently stolen from her people. She and her brother, played by Tosin Cole, ally with the king’s children against his rule.

The trailer features Viola Davis providing comfort with the line, “They don’t hate you. They hate what you are meant to become.” Stenberg delivers a warning in the footage, saying, “Your life is in danger — you and your people.” Idris shares a romantic moment, telling Mbedu’s character, “You have unraveled me.”

Ejiofor addressed the CinemaCon crowd about joining the project’s stacked ensemble cast. “Movies like this don’t come around often,” Ejiofor said. “It was time for me to be a king.” Regina King also spoke about her decision to join the film quickly. “Black girls deserve to see themselves in worlds of wonder, power and imagination,” King noted.

The film adapts Tomi Adeyemi’s best-selling YA novel, with the author co-writing the script alongside Prince-Bythewood. Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Idris Elba round out the cast. Production took place in South Africa, and the team held an open casting call for actors living in Nigeria.

Paramount has set Jan. 15, 2027 as the theatrical release date for the fantasy epic.
