Top Gun 3 Update: Tom Cruise Sequel Movie Gets Best News Possible

Tom Cruise fans are headed back to the danger zone, as Top Gun 3 is definitely happening.

Cruise first played Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in 1986’s Top Gun, which was directed by Tony Scott and released through Paramount Pictures. Top Gun was eventually followed by a sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, in 2022. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, that movie also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and more. It won the Best Sound Academy Award, while it also received a number of other nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

What is the Top Gun 3 update?

Since the release of Top Gun: Maverick, there’s been talk about making a third film in the franchise. Per Variety, it’s now been officially announced at CinemaCon that Top Gun 3 is definitely happening, and Cruise will be returning to star in the sequel.

It was previously known that a third Top Gun movie was being worked on, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been open about the matter. Others, such as Paramount’s Dana Goldberg and Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Christopher McQuarrie, have also discussed doing some pre-production work on the project; however, Top Gun 3 could have theoretically fallen apart at any time.

Now, with the film having officially been given the green light, Cruise fans can go to sleep this evening knowing they will for sure see Maverick return; although, when said return is happening remains up in the air, as a release date for the movie has not yet been set.

Plot details for Top Gun 3 also remain under wraps at this time. There have been no other casting announcements besides Cruise that have been made, meaning there’s no information as of yet regarding which Top Gun: Maverick stars will be returning for the next installment.
