Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Movie Divides Critics, Gets Mixed Reviews & RT Score

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is out in theaters this week. Ahead of the film’s release, reviews are coming in, and opinions remain divided amongst critics for Cronin’s latest horror entry.

What are critics saying about Lee Cronin’s The Mummy?

On Rotten Tomatoes, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy debuted to a score of 59%, a surprising low for Cronin seeing as his first two films, The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise, both scored in the high 80s. However, the score of The Mummy doesn’t tell the full story of the reception to the film, which seems to be highly dependent on your love of the absurd in the horror genre.

The film’s reviews all paint to a mixed bag, with many critics praising the film’s gory visuals and scares, but noting that as far as a true story goes, there isn’t much here. The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney notes the film is “overlong,” but is “remarkably sustained lurid entertainment that offers a fresh take on the mummy myth.” AV Club’s Simon Abrams likens the movie to “a good cover band,” but one that’s “only mastered one emotional register and keeps playing that way for a longer-than-average set.”

Variety’s Guy Lodge also similarly called the movie a bit “generic,” but praised it for being “Brashly violent, clattery and pleasingly untied to any direct predecessor,” and said the film has “a lot here for gorehounds to feast on.” The Film Verdict’s Alonso Duralde, on the other hand, calls the constant effects a bit “tiresome” by the time the movie ends, and criticizes the film for simply relying on them too much.

At the end of the day, it seems like Cronin’s The Mummy will be divisive. For horror fans who love Cronin’s past works, the movie seems to have everything you could want, but for those hoping for a more concrete story, they might be a bit disappointed.
