Every new detail revealed about Godzilla Minus Zero
Writer and director Takashi Yamazaki has shared a series of new updates about Godzilla Minus Zero in an interview with Collider. Yamazaki indicated that the sequel will not see a major change in runtime compared to the original film. Addressing the film’s length, he stated, “It’s about the same in terms of runtime.”
However, the filmmaker emphasized that the visual scope of the movie is bigger than that of its predecessor. He explained, “I haven’t counted the shots yet, but I can certainly say that there are going to be more cuts that require VFX. But thankfully, Toho gave me more money this time, which means more people that I can bring on to the VFX team.”
The use of Imax is also being expanded for the sequel. Yamazaki confirmed that a large portion of the film will be presented in full-frame format. “This being a kaiju film, and with the added branding of ‘filmed for Imax,’ I would say there is a fairly high percentage of shots that are filmed in full Imax,” he said. However, he noted that this approach brings additional technical demands.
Set in 1949, the story continues with the Shikishima family as Japan faces another devastating encounter with Godzilla, who returns stronger than before. Ryûnosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprise their roles. The sequel will also broaden its scope beyond Japan, involving the United States military. This includes the Department of Defense, Navy, and Army. The director added, “As far as the English dialogue and how much of the film is in Japanese versus English, there are certainly some parts that are in English and some Japanese characters speaking in English, as well.”
Yamazaki highlighted one particular moment that stood out during production. He stated, “[One part] was probably one of the best kaiju sequences that I’ve ever seen. The fact that I got goosebumps looking at [it] means audiences are going to see something they’ve never seen before.”
