Ryan Gosling confirms Project Hail Mary’s theatrical window has been extended

Amazon MGM Studios recently unveiled its upcoming slate of movies at CinemaCon. At the event, company head Mike Hopkins shared that Project Hail Mary crossed the $525 million mark worldwide (via IGN).

Ryan Gosling and the film’s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also took to the stage to celebrate its massive success. The former confirmed to audiences that its theatrical window has been extended, giving fans more time to check it out on the big screen (via Cosmic Book News).

The actor thanked audiences for the love and support showered on the film. To further show his appreciation, he handed out flowers to attendees. He also gave a woman in the crowd a thank-you note that was passed around to others seated.

Additionally, Hopkins stressed, “As I say to our team constantly, our ambition for theatrical film is in the top half of the first inning. Project Hail Mary is just the beginning” (via Deadline). Earlier, he assured theater owners that Amazon MGM Studios was committed to releasing 15 films a year on the big screen as planned.

The movie is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. Like the source material, it revolves around a school teacher and former biologist, Dr. Ryland Grace. He wakes up on a spaceship one day, stricken with amnesia. Grace eventually remembers that he was sent on a space mission important to humanity. After he begins working, he meets and befriends a rock-shaped alien, whom he names Rocky. The pair eventually realizes they are on parallel missions, prompting them to join forces.

Lord and Miller directed it from Drew Goddard’s screenplay. Weir, Lord, and Miller also serve as producers alongside Ryan Gosling, Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, and Aditya Sood.
