Jamie Dornan’s Aragorn Casting Has the Same 2 Reactions From LOTR Fans

Jamie Dornan‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum casting has sparked mixed reactions online. The CinemaCon 2026 reveal placed the actor in a role that has left people comparing.

What Lord of the Rings fans are saying about Jamie Dornan’s Aragorn casting

Jamie Dornan’s casting as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has divided fans online. Warner Bros. revealed the casting at CinemaCon 2026 alongside Leo Woodall as Halvard. Dornan will portray the younger version of the ranger under his alias Strider.

Viggo Mortensen originally played Aragorn across Peter Jackson’s landmark trilogy. His portrayal remains iconic among the franchise’s global fanbase. The decision to recast the role has sparked immediate and passionate reactions across social media.

Several fans embraced the news with enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter). One user wrote, “THIS IS HUGE! So excited to see Jamie in this!” Another called the casting “a dub,” praising Dornan as “actually a great actor.” A third user joked, “Jamie Dornan as Aragorn? Suddenly I’m a LOTR fan. Don’t check my 2014 tweets about Christian Grey.”

Others pushed back sharply against replacing Mortensen in the role. One user declared, “How dare he stand where viggo stood.” Another simply responded, “That’s not my king.” A separate post predicted, “Jamie Dornan as Aragorn?? Yeah this is gonna divide the internet.”

The film follows Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum before Sauron can extract the Ring’s location. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum and direct the project. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens will produce it.

The story draws from J. R. R. Tolkien’s footnotes and takes place between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Kate Winslet will also feature as a character named Marigol. Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen will return as Frodo and Gandalf, respectively.
