Jamie Foxx & Cameron Diaz’s Remake Movie Is Leaving Netflix Soon

Netflix is going to remove a 2014 comedy, starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, from its platform next month. The film is based on a decade-old comic strip that has since spawned two iconic Broadway productions and several film adaptations.

Jamie Foxx-led Annie remake is leaving Netflix

The 2014 remake of Annie will not be a part of Netflix’s catalog from Friday, May 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).

It is the modern adaptation of the 1982 film of the same name and the eponymous 1977 Broadway musical, both based on Little Orphan Annie, a 1924 comic strip from The Daily News. Created by Harold Gray, the comic strip ran for 86 years, ending in 2010.

The story centers on Annie, a 10-year-old orphan living with other young girls under the care of alcoholic Miss Colleen Hannigan. Annie’s life changes when she meets Will Stacks, a wealthy businessman running for mayor.

After he saves the girl from an accident, the video of his kind act goes viral, improving his reputation. Upon his advisor’s request, Will fosters Annie. Although it began as a political move, Will and his assistant, Grace, slowly form a bond with the young girl.

The film stars Jamie Foxx as Will, Cameron Diaz as Colleen, Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie, Rose Byrne as Grace, and Bobby Cannavale as Guy, among others. It also features cameos by popular figures, including Michael J. Fox, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Patricia Clarkson, and Rihanna.

Will Gluck directed Annie based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Aline Brosh McKenna. Unlike the previous adaptations, which take place during The Great Depression, the 2014 film is set in modern New York City.

Gluck and McKenna also changed several aspects of the characters and incorporated lighter, family-friendly elements. However, it did not fare well with the fans of the earlier adaptations.

Released on December 19, 2014, the film was universally panned for diverging from the original setting. As a result, it currently holds a 28% critic approval rating and 59% user score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nonetheless, the remake managed to gross 136.8 million at the global box office against an estimated $65 million budget.
