Alec Baldwin talks about retirement and Halyna Hutchins’ death
Alec Baldwin, one of the most revered names in Hollywood, ended up in a complex spot during the filming of Rust, a low-budget indie that he was starring in and producing in New Mexico. During the filming, Baldwin was slated to film with an empty prop gun, when the gun was used on set, a live round emerged and hit cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins passed away from the wound. Director Joel Souza was also hurt in the incident.
This accident changed the trajectory of Baldwin’s career. Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter a couple of times, but the charges were dropped. In July 2024, he was cleared for good, but that was not enough.
During his new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Baldwin delved into this. “We had this incident, this tragedy, in New Mexico, where Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the film, and that was unspeakably difficult to deal with.” He added, “Because of the situation in New Mexico, which was very painful, I wound up staying home a lot. I was home with my kids for three-and-a-half years — I hardly worked at all — and that’s just changing now.”
He further said, “I’m going to go off and do a bunch of things. But I was home, and I got used to it, and I don’t want to leave my house anymore. I don’t. I don’t want to work anymore, I don’t, I really don’t.” Baldwin continued, “I want to retire and stay home with my kids.”
Baldwin’s most recent appearance was in Torrente for President. He is also associated with upcoming projects, including Kid Santa and National Lampoon’s Hollywood Hustle.
