Movie Based on 2020’s Mind-Bending Fantasy Book in Development
StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures revealed their next major collaboration at one of Hollywood’s biggest annual events. The production partners confirmed early development on a feature adaptation of one of the most widely translated fantasy novels of the decade.
StudioCanal announces The Midnight Library movie
StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures officially announced a movie adaptation of The Midnight Library during CinemaCon. Matt Haig’s beloved fantasy novel has shipped over 12 million copies worldwide. Publishers have also translated the book into more than 50 languages since its publication.
Blueprint Pictures has built a strong reputation backing acclaimed films since its founding in 2005. The indie production company previously partnered with Martin McDonagh on In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and The Banshees of Inisherin. The latter earned nine Oscar nominations and starred Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.
StudioCanal and Blueprint have collaborated before on projects including A Boy Called Christmas and The Mercy. Hugh Spearing, StudioCanal’s Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Distribution, confirmed the project. He revealed that both companies are currently in early development on the feature adaptation.
The story follows Nora Seed, a thirty-something woman who reaches her breaking point after a life of regret. She discovers a mysterious library situated between life and death during her darkest moment. Each book inside lets her experience a different version of her life.
Nora explores paths she could have taken with different relationships and career choices. Her search for the perfect life puts both herself and the library in unexpected danger. The journey ultimately teaches her important lessons about what makes life worth living.
Haig has seen multiple works targeted for screen adaptation beyond this latest announcement. His 2010 vampire horror comedy The Radleys reached screens in 2024 with Damian Lewis leading the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch previously sought to adapt Haig’s 2017 novel How to Stop Time through his SunnyMarch banner. StudioCanal later partnered with Cumberbatch in 2023 to develop that project as a six-episode series instead.
The adaptation does not have any specific talent attached to it yet.
