Reboot of Iconic ’80s Sci-Fi Movie Officially in Works at StudioCanal

StudioCanal has officially confirmed that a reboot of John Carpenter’s cult classic Escape From New York is now in active development. The announcement was made this week during the annual exhibition trade convention in Las Vegas, which is a major push to revive the beloved anti-hero Snake Plissken for a new generation of moviegoers.

The confirmation came directly from the floor of CinemaCon, where StudioCanal revealed the Escape from New York reboot as part of its upcoming slate. The production company remained tight-lipped regarding casting, plot specifics, or a potential release window (via Variety).

The original 1981 film, set in a grim future where Manhattan Island operates as a lawless maximum-security prison, featured Kurt Russell in one of his most iconic roles as the eye-patch-wearing renegade Snake Plissken. The film’s premise, which is a convict forced to rescue the President from a crumbling, crime-ridden New York, remains a cornerstone of gritty ’80s sci-fi.

The path to this latest Escape from New York reboot has been rocky. For years, the property has been stuck in a revolving door of creative talent and stalled development. Most notably, there were previously extensive talks surrounding a remake spearheaded by Leigh Whannell. The filmmaker is known for Upgrade and The Invisible Man.

As previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Whannell was attached to write the script for Fox with a specific vision in mind. The outlet noted that Whannell’s approach aimed to retain core elements of the John Carpenter original while consciously avoiding the “bloated tentpole remake path” that plagued other 1980s reboots like Robocop and Total Recall.

It remains unclear whether this newly announced StudioCanal project is a continuation of that earlier Whannell effort or an entirely new take. Whannell had been positioned to potentially direct as well, though no deal was ever finalized. Prior to his involvement, the project had seen attachments from writer Neil Cross and director Robert Rodriguez, both of whom eventually left.

With StudioCanal now steering the ship, the Escape from New York franchise appears one step closer to its long-awaited revival.
