New Michelle Williams Movie’s Release Date Signals It’s an Awards Contender

Michelle Williams is no stranger to award recognition. With the reveal of her upcoming movie’s release date, it seems like her next movie could be another strong player for major awards.

What makes Michelle Williams’ new movie an awards contender?

Williams’ upcoming movie, Chloe Domont’s A Place in Hell, has been revealed to be releasing on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026. The movie also stars Daisy Edgar-AnJones, Andrew Scott, Danny Huston, Arturo Castro, Rob Yang, Kyle Mooney, Dani Oliveros, and Esther McGregor, and follows the story of “A cutthroat criminal defense attorney (Williams), on the verge of making partner,” who “sees her ambitions upended when a younger lawyer (Edgar-Jones) is brought in to replace her. As rivalry escalates into a battle for control, the two women push one another to dangerous extremes.”

While the stacked cast and distributor Neon’s involvement in the film suggests the movie will be big, the film’s release date is what really highlights it as a major player in the upcoming awards season. Traditionally, Christmas Day is one of the biggest movie release dates of the year, particularly due to the fact that it is historically one of the most-attended box office days of the year. Due to everyone being on vacation and other businesses closed, Christmas serves as a major day not only to release, but for award purposes.

Not only is it a big day for people seeing movies, but it also serves as a big release date close to the “award season” of Hollywood. With most major award shows happening throughout January-March of the following year, releasing a movie in December allows it to be at the top of mind for most voters, and helps create even more momentum if the movie is successful by keeping it in the news throughout the end of the year and into award season.

Despite little being known about the movie, A Place in Hell is already getting some early award buzz. The film was listed as an alternate in several of Variety’s 2027 Oscars predictions, including Williams being named a potential Best Actress nominee, Scott being named a potential Best Supporting Actor nominee, and the movie getting a potential Best Original Screenplay nod. Williams, of course, is no stranger to awards, having been nominated five times for an Academy Award, with her latest nomination coming in the Best Actress category for her role in 2023’s The Fabelmans.
