Despite strong anticipation surrounding the film, early reactions have been divided. The first trailer prompted widespread discussion online, with much of the attention centered on Maui’s appearance. Particularly, Johnson’s curly wig drew noticeable reactions across social media, where users responded with a mix of criticism and humor.
The project features Catherine Laga’aia in the lead role, with Johnson stepping into the live-action portrayal of Maui after previously voicing the character. The film follows Moana as she ventures beyond the shores of Motunui in response to a call from the Ocean, joining forces with the demigod on a journey aimed at restoring balance to her people.
Johnson’s transformation into Maui has emerged as a major point of discussion ahead of the film’s release. The actor has described the physical demands and challenges of the new role. He noted that the use of prosthetics, hair, and costume added close to 40 pounds.
Johnson said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “There’s a freedom when you perform, whether it’s as an actor or singing. So that was an adjustment on how to actually work my emotions through the 40 pounds of prosthetics and hair and body that I had on me.”
The live-action movie is scheduled for theatrical release on July 10, 2026.
