Gary Oldman’s Darkest Hour to leave Netflix next month
The streaming giant’s movies and TV show catalog will bid farewell to the critically acclaimed biographical war drama soon.
As per What’s on Netflix, Darkest Hour will exit Netflix’s content library on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Set in May 1940, the movie opens with Winston Churchill replacing Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom amid the growing threat from Adolf Hitler. After German forces advance and trap British troops at Dunkirk, Churchill faces pressure from his War Cabinet to negotiate peace with Germany.
Joe Wright, known for helming Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, directed Darkest Hour. Alongside writing the script, Anthony McCarten also co-produced it. Following the success of The Theory of Everything, the Oscar-nominated writer sold his speculative script of Darkest Hour to Working Title Film in 2015 (via Deadline).
The movie stars Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Kristin Scott Thomas as Clementine, Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI, Ronald Pickup as Neville Chamberlain, Lily James as Elizabeth Layton, and Stephen Dillane as Viscount Halifax, among others.
Released on November 22, 2017, Darkest Hour received high praise for its compelling narrative, strong direction, and Oldman’s powerful performance. On Rotten Tomatoes, it continues to hold an impressive 84% Tomatometer rating from over 300 critics. Meanwhile, the audience gave the film a similar Popcornmeter score of 83%.
Moreover, the critical acclaim translated to box office success, as Darkest Hour grossed $158.8 million globally (via Box Office Mojo). The following year, it earned six Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture. Ultimately, the movie won two awards: Gary Oldman took home Best Actor, and the makeup and hairstyling team won the other.
