Mark Hamill celebrates 50th anniversary of the first day of Star Wars’ production

During an interview with USA Today, Mark Hamill spoke about the 50th anniversary of Star Wars’ production.

“It doesn’t feel like 50 years, and it makes you feel old,” the actor shared. He admitted to going through the notes he made during the film’s production, which brought back many memories for him. “Time flies when you’re having fun!” he said.

The Long Walk actor also recalled taking his firstborn, Nathan, to the Return of the Jedi sets, who was “totally into it.” Hamill said, “He could sit in Yoda’s house because he was little, [as he was] perfectly proportioned. He sat on the Emperor’s throne, he was in the creature shop, and they were letting him play with things.”

The 74-year-old added that his second son, Griffin, is not fond of the franchise because it’s “too commercial” for his liking. Meanwhile, his daughter, Chelsea, “likes them.”

Mark Hamill rose to fame with his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise. He was 25 years old when he began filming the original film. After the original trilogy, he reprised his role by lending his voice to various Star Wars animated shows. It was followed by on-screen appearances in the modern trilogy. Furthermore, Hamill had cameos on Disney+ shows, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, where he was de-aged to fit the timeline.

After 50 years in the iconic role, the veteran said he would be stepping away from the franchise. “I had my time. I’m appreciative of that. I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters,” he told ComicBook.com. The animated series Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy was the last time he voiced Luke Skywalker.

While it has been a few months since the show ended, Hamill is collaborating with LEGO to promote the new Star Wars toys. The new toy lineup will reportedly use LEGO’s SMART Play System, a technology that makes the toys more interactive.
