Author of Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid Reveals Her Actual Identity
The author behind Sydney Sweeney’s hit thriller The Housemaid has finally stepped out from behind the curtain. After years of fan speculation about who was really writing the books, the person behind the pseudonym has decided the time has come to set the record straight. The reveal puts a real face to a name millions of readers around the world thought they already knew.
The author known as Freida McFadden reveals her real identity
Bestselling thriller author Freida McFadden has finally revealed her true identity after years of fan speculation. McFadden confirmed she is Sara Cohen, a doctor who specialises in treating brain disorders. She made the revelation in a USA Today interview published April 8.
The author behind The Housemaid used a pseudonym, wig, and glasses to maintain a double life as both a physician and novelist. Her publishing career began with 2013’s The Devil Wears Scrubs. She deliberately kept both identities separate to avoid conflict with her medical career.
“I’m at a point in my career when I’m tired of this being a secret,” McFadden told USA Today. “I’m tired of people debating if I’m a real person or if I’m three men. I am a real person and I have a real identity and I don’t have anything to hide.”
Her glasses are genuine, but the hair is a wig worn simply because she has “no idea how to style my hair.” McFadden stepped back from full-time medicine in late 2023, citing feeling “completely overwhelmed from trying to do both.”
“My whole goal was to keep it a secret until I was ready to step back from my doctor job,” she said, “so it wouldn’t be like everyone I work with suddenly knew and it compromised my ability to do my job.”
Her hospital colleagues eventually discovered her identity and were “really nice about it,” helping her maintain the secret. McFadden insists the revelation changes nothing about her relationship with readers. “Even though the name will be a surprise, nothing else will,” she said. “I’ve always been genuine with my readers.”
