The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Box Office Streak Could Extend Most of April

April belongs to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opened in United States on April 1, 2026. The Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo animated movie is based on the 2007 Super Mario Galaxy video game. A sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film’s voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

Why could the Super Mario Galaxy Movie rule the April box office?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has so far earned $414 million globally. Approximately $208 million of that $414 million figure has come from the United States and Canada, while the other $207 million has come from other territories. Despite having only been out for eight days, it is already the third-highest-grossing film of 2026 following Pegasus 3 and Project Hail Mary, and it’s currently the highest-grossing animated film of the year.

Looking at the United States release date calendar for the rest of the month, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie doesn’t have a whole lot of competition in the next few weeks; meaning, it will almost certainly continue to claim the number one spot at the domestic box office until the arrival of Michael.

This coming weekend doesn’t have much that will challenge The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — the Faces of Death remake is getting some good buzz, but it surely won’t be enough of a mainstream hit to overthrow Mario, and Exit 8 doesn’t have much of a shot, either.

The big release the weekend after that (April 17) is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which is currently tracking to open somewhere in the $10-20 million range. Even if it ends up overperforming, Super Mario will likely end up beating that, too.

Michael then arrives on April 24. That’ll likely claim the top spot; however, Super Mario Galaxy Movie will still probably wind up doing well, as Michael is going after a completely different demographic. With not a whole lot of other children or family movies coming to theaters for quite some time, expect Mario’s reign to be a long one.
