Amanda Seyfried’s Netflix Cinderella Movie Gets First Photos

Netflix has finally shared the official photos from Steps, its upcoming fantasy animated movie. It reimagines the classic Cinderella tale, giving more spotlight to the beloved character’s evil stepsisters. The film is scheduled to debut later this year.

“Think you know Cinderella’s ‘evil’ stepsisters? Think again! When misunderstood Lilith is blamed for hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand, she accidentally turns her sister Margot into a frog, and leaves the kingdom in the hands of a prince-obsessed mean girl,” reads the official synopsis. “Now Lilith must team up with Cinderella…and a surprisingly dreamy troll…to save the kingdom, repair the fractured fairytale, and prove that even so-called villains deserve a shot at happily-ever-after.”

Who is in the Steps photos?

The photos feature a first look at Netflix’s animated version of Cinderella, who is being voiced by Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried. One of the images also introduced Ali Wong‘s character Lilith, who has no choice but to work with Cinderella to find a way to turn her sister back into a human. Seyfriend and Wong will also be joined by Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu as Cinderella’s other stepsister, Margot, who accidentally becomes a frog.

Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci writing the screenplay. This marks Tzue’s feature directorial debut after winning a Student Academy Awards gold medal. The movie is produced by Amy Poehler and Kim Lessing for Paper Kite Productions, along with Jane Hartwell. It is a production by Netflix Animation Studios.

“Amanda has this incredible ability to make her characters specific and relatable, and we absolutely needed that when taking on a character that’s as legendary as Cinderella,” Tzue said in a statement. “We wanted to create a modern heroine complete with flaws and coping mechanisms, and Amanda immediately understood the task. Her portrayal of Cinderella is hilarious and heartbreaking and, most importantly, refreshingly human. You won’t want to miss it.”

Ripa added, “Amanda has been an absolute joy to work with. She brings a level of experience and passion that inspires us to dig even deeper into the character. Her process of honing in on emotions, the control she has over her voice—it all comes together to give the classic character of Cinderella a depth and humor we could’ve never imagined.”
