Avatar 4 & 5 Will Be ‘Radically Different,’ New Report Reveals
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are expected to be “radically different” from the previous movies, according to a new report.
What is the latest update for Avatar 4 and 5?
Following Avatar: Fire and Ash, Pandora might experience significant changes for the final two movies. According to a report published in The Wrap, “conversations are being had” about how to make the next Avatar movies “cheaper and shorter.” The idea is for Disney to make their investment “less risky” in the future.
Furthermore, James Cameron, the architect of the Avatar franchise, is “questioning” if the franchise will continue after the underwhelming financial returns on Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Released in 2009, Avatar is the highest-grossing movie of all time with $2.9 billion worldwide. Despite a 13-year hiatus between movies, 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water exceeded box office expectations with a $2.3 billion gross, the third-highest ever for a movie. Both movies had substantial budgets: Avatar’s budget was an estimated $237 million, while The Way of Water’s budget was north of $400 million.
The third movie, 2025’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, grossed $1.4 billion. For almost all movies, that would be considered a success. For an Avatar 3, which had a reported budget of $350 million and a marketing spend of $150 million, earning about $1 billion less than its predecessor isn’t an ideal result.
All eyes are now on Cameron. According to an anonymous Avatar team member quoted in The Wrap’s report, Cameron would have “engaged with another project” before returning for Avatar 4 if Avatar: Fire and Ash eclipsed $2 billion. Now, Cameron is intent on making Avatar 4 and 5, which are being described as “radically different” entries from Avatar: Fire and Ash. The comparison to explain the changes is Star Wars and how The Empire Strikes Back differs from A New Hope.
“This time, I could see him being like, ‘I’m on a mission,’” an Avatar team member said about Cameron’s commitment to Avatar 4 and 5. “I believe unequivocally that he will finish his five-film saga. Never bet against James Cameron.”
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released on 4K on May 19, 2026. The film has yet to announce a streaming date on Disney+.
Avatar 4 is dated for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is scheduled for December 19, 2031.
