Emilia Clarke’s When Darkness Loves Us sets 2027 release date
According to Variety, When Darkness Loves Us, starring Emilia Clarke, is slated for a theatrical release in 2027. Bleecker Street is handling distribution across most international markets after backing the project early in its development. The deal excludes Australia and New Zealand, where the film will be released by Umbrella Entertainment and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Directed by James Ashcroft, who co-wrote the script with Hayley Sproull and Eli Kent, the film is adapted from a novella by Elizabeth Engstrom. The story follows a woman who survives 15 years trapped beneath the surface in an isolated cave system. After finally making her way back, she becomes determined to reunite with a family she is convinced is hers, regardless of the cost.
Alongside Clarke, the cast features Marlon Williams, Victoria Pedretti, and Natascha McElhone. Production on the film has been completed in New Zealand.
Desray Armstrong serves as producer, with Ashcroft, Clarke, Ant Timpson, Katherine Bridle, Tyler DiNapoli, and Kent Sanderson among the executive producers. Ari Harrison, Jasmin McSweeney, Miranda King, and Nicola Smith are credited as associate producers. The distribution deal was arranged by King and Avy Eschenasy for Bleecker Street, while CAA Media Finance represented the filmmakers.
In remarks about the project, Sanderson noted, “This film is a true journey into the darkness, literally and figuratively, and we can’t wait to shock audiences worldwide with James’ singular vision.”
Meanwhile, Ashcroft said, “My passion for Elizabeth Engstrom’s story remains boundless. What an absolute gift it has been bringing this work to the screen.”
As of now, exact release date of the project remains unknown.
