Sony Pictures will reportedly restructure operations with hundreds of layoffs

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Entertainment is set to undergo a significant reorganization that will involve cutting several hundred positions across its global workforce. The reductions are expected to affect multiple divisions, including film, television, and corporate operations. This will be carried out over the coming months.

The plan was outlined to employees in a memo from CEO Ravi Ahuja. He assumed the role in January following the retirement of Tony Vinciquerra. Alongside the workforce changes, the company is also making adjustments at the leadership level. This includes the exit of Colin Davis, who previously served as executive vice president of comedy development.

According to the publication, these changes are “targeted and strategic.” They are meant to shift resources toward areas identified as key to future growth. These include franchise development and brand extensions, anime, experiential content, platform-driven programming, and stronger coordination with the wider Sony Group, particularly in areas related to gaming and online platforms.

The reorganization also includes structural shifts within the company. Sony’s Game Show Group will be combined with GSN under the leadership of Suzanne Prete. The nonfiction division of Sony Pictures Television will move under the TV studios president Katherine Pope. In addition, the company is shutting down the visual effects firm Pixomondo.

Following Ahuja’s appointment, the company has placed focus on its Peanuts intellectual property, its agreement with Big Shot Pictures, and projects based on PlayStation titles such as The Last of Us and God of War. The company is also continuing to build on established franchises including The Boys, Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Outlander, and Jeopardy!.
