Marvel’s X-Men Director Reveals Kevin Feige’s Plan for Reboot

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been building toward mutantkind’s arrival for years, and now the director tapped to helm the X-Men reboot is finally shedding some light on Kevin Feige‘s vision. While fans have been treated to familiar faces returning in Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, the standalone film promises something entirely different.

Jake Schreier says X-Men reboot will give mutants a ‘fresh start’ in MCU

Jake Schreier, fresh off directing Thunderbolts*, is going to lead the X-Men MCU debut feature. In a conversation with MovieWeb, Schreier offered a rare glimpse into how he and Kevin Feige are approaching the iconic property.

“I would say that we are aiming to do something that feels like a fresh start and going for something that feels new,” Schreier explained. “And, really, something that Kevin has pushed for is this idea of, ‘What can we do within this world?'” he added.

The director has immersed himself in X-Men history to prepare, studying both Chris Claremont’s legendary run and Grant Morrison’s influential work. This research isn’t about copying what came before but identifying unexplored territory.

“There’s so many different interesting takes within this world,” Schreier said. “Just thinking about, ‘What are the corners of it? What are the sides of it that maybe haven’t been done so brilliantly in so many of these great movies that we can… explore where it feels like we’re doing something new?'”

The challenge facing the X-Men reboot is clear. Avengers: Doomsday will feature James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, alongside other veterans. How much of the standalone film will lean on nostalgia versus introducing fresh mutants remains unanswered.

For now, the message from Marvel Studios is consistent: when mutants finally get their own spotlight, they won’t simply be retreading familiar ground.
