Steven Spielberg’s 97% RT Movie & Its 2 Sequels To Leave Netflix

An iconic Steven Spielberg-directed movie and its two sequels are leaving Netflix’s library very soon. The franchise has had a lasting cultural impact, with the original movie becoming one of the most profitable projects in the history of cinema.

Jaws 1, 2, and 3 are leaving Netflix next month

Netflix subscribers won’t be able to stream Jaws, Jaws 2, and Jaws 3-D from Friday, May 1, 2026. All three films center on deadly shark attacks that terrorize coastal communities. They blend suspense and survival horror, making it one of the most recognizable horror franchises.

Steven Spielberg helmed the original Jaws movie, which premiered on June 20, 1975. It not only earned near-perfect ratings but also had an incredible run at the box office. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a 97% critic rating and a 91% audience rating. Made on a $7 million budget, the movie raked in over $490 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Additionally, at the 1976 Oscars, Jaws received four nominations and won three of those.

Following the monumental success of Jaws, Spielberg reportedly declined to direct Jaws 2, saying it was a “nightmare” to shoot the original movie (via Collider). Despite Universal Pictures’ executives’ persuasion, the Oscar-winning director didn’t return for the sequel. After considering several other directors, the studio ultimately hired Jeannot Szwarc.

Jaws 2 was released on June 16, 1978, and didn’t receive the same reception as its predecessor. It currently has a 56% critic score and 40% audience score on the review aggregator site. At the end of its theatrical run, the movie had grossed $187 million globally.

Jaws 3-D, directed by Joe Alves, was released eight years after the original movie on July 22, 1983. With a 10% critic score and 17% user score, the third installment has the lowest rating of the three movies. Moreover, it managed to earn just around $88 million at the global box office.

Netflix subscribers have until the end of this month to stream the three movies on the platform.
