Back to the Future Writer Answers Part 4 Questions With ‘F– You’

Questions about Back to the Future 4 have continued to follow the franchise for years, but co-writer Bob Gale has once again addressed the topic with a definitive response. Responding to repeated questions about a possible sequel, Gale made it clear that there are no plans to extend the franchise.

Why Back to the Future 4 will ‘never’ happen explained

Speculation around a fourth part of Back to the Future have remained constant but co-creator Bob Gale has reiterated that the franchise will not continue beyond its original three films. Addressing the long-running question, Gale explained that the story was deliberately concluded.

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Gale emphasized that the trilogy was always designed with a definitive ending. “All the time since part three, people have been saying, ‘When are you guys going to do part four? When are you guys going to do part four?’ And the answer is either: ‘Never, or f— you,’” he said.

Gale also pointed to the role played by Michael J. Fox, suggesting that continuing without him would not be appropriate. He explained, “We put the end at the end of part three because it was the end. And then when Michael J. Fox announced he had Parkinson’s disease, it was like, ‘Okay, do you want to see a Back to the Future movie without Michael J. Fox?’”

In addition, the writer indicated that returning to the story could undermine its legacy. He explained that any new installment would likely struggle to match the impact of the original films. “The movie, whatever we came up with, would never live up to the first three, and history has shown us that, so absolutely clearly,” he noted.

Instead of developing a direct sequel, Gale and director Robert Zemeckis have focused on reinterpreting the material through a stage adaptation.
