Weapons Prequel Movie Gets Major Update, Zach Cregger’s Involvement Detailed

The Weapons prequel that’s long been rumored to be happening has gotten a major update, including what filmmaker Zach Cregger’s involvement will be.

What do we know about the Weapons prequel?

According to a new report from Deadline, Cregger will be writing the upcoming screenplay for the prequel alongside Zach Shields. The movie, which is currently under the working title of Gladys, will see Cregger, Roy Lee, and Miri Yoon return to produce.

No other information on the movie was mentioned, including whether or not Cregger will return to direct the movie or who else, besides Oscar-winner Amy Madigan, will be in the movie. Cregger’s next movie is set to be his highly anticipated Resident Evil adaptation, and it’s unclear what his film after that will be.

In the original film, Amy Madigan plays the mysterious Gladys, an eccentric and, at times, terrifying character who appears in Cregger’s film as a witch-like character that is responsible for the missing children in the film. Gladys takes the children via magic, and is using them to stave off either old age or an illness of some sort. Her magical abilities also allow her to possess people. For her role in the film, Madigan won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Weapons is written and directed by Cregger, who is also serving as the producer. Additional cast members include Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. It is produced by Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Lifshitz, and Raphael Margules, with Michelle Morrissey and Josh Brolin set as executive producers.

Weapons was a massive hit upon its release in 2025. The film grossed $270 million at the global box office, and also saw Madigan take home several awards for her portrayal of Gladys.
