Best Action Movies on Netflix (Updated: April 2026)

What do you think of when you hear the words “Action Movies“? Big guns and bigger explosions? The sound of steel grinding on steel, axes and swords swinging wildly? Martial arts masters trading blows? Roaring monsters and men of science struggling to save the world? All of the answers are valid, for the action genre is broad, encompassing many distinct specialties. Yet all of these flavors may be found streaming on Netflix this Spring.

What are the best action movies on Netflix as of April 2026?

Picking the best of a collection of action movies is a tricky prospect. It is tricky, even when limited to movies available on Netflix. The recent updates have given us some new titles to peruse, and we’re not mad about that. Still, the following list encompasses a variety of movies that, regardless of personal tastes and purity tests, are undoubtedly action-packed.

Heat (1995)

Easily one of the best action movies of all time, this Michael Mann classic stars Al Pacino as Lieutenant Hannah, who is trying to track down master criminal Neil McCauley (Robert de Niro), who’s planning a final heist before retiring. These two work to thwart each other at every turn, which essentially gives us a whole film in which Pacino and De Niro, playing two guys nobody wants to mess with, are up against each other.

Everything about this movie is what we might call indulgent, but it’s done with absolute finesse. So if you’re looking for a bombastic action film that’s also a masterwork of tone and image, go for this one. The film does little to let off the gas, giving us a title that is all too appropriate. Despite its three-hour runtime, this film is never boring. We can chalk that up to the ability of Mann as a filmmaker who doesn’t just throw in the spectacle of an action film, but uses every element of the form to tell a great story, particularly in its ability to also be a great character study. And as much as we love this film, the greatest tribute to the movie might lie with Christopher Nolan, who certainly used Heat’s opening to influence his opening to The Dark Knight.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Taking us into the epic war film category that still uses the tools of an action film, Saving Private Ryan is one of Steven Spielberg’s crowning achievements. Set during the invasion of Normandy during WWII, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) is assigned to move behind enemy lines in search of Private James Ryan, who is to be sent home as the sole surviving son when his three brothers have already been killed in war.

Though Saving Private Ryan is mostly a war drama, the prolonged, visceral realism of its violent battle scenes makes it an action film. Still, the “action” points the film more toward the impact and trauma of war than toward the spectacle of warfare. Still, this is a film that transcends what might usually be associated with the genre. Simply put, this is one of the most important movies of all time. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and took home six, including Best Director, Best Cinematography (Janusz Kamiński), Best Editing, Best Film Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing. It lost Best Picture to Shakespeare in Love, and is still considered one of the biggest upsets in Oscar’s history.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2009)

Starring Uma Thurman as The Bride, the film follows an ex-assassin who wakes from a coma after being pummeled, shot, and left for dead in a church on her wedding day. Four years later, she sets out on a relentless path of revenge against the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, her former team that betrayed her, and their leader, Bill.

Structured through a series of chapters (a la Lady Snowblood, a 1973 film that strongly influenced Tarantino), the film moves between timelines, revealing pieces of The Bride’s past while tracking her present-day mission. The film also gives us the history of each of her targets, particularly O-Ren Ishii. The action scenes are among the most unique to the genre, largely due to their style and nods to kung fu and wuxia influences. The film is also beautifully shot, thanks largely to cinematographer Robert Richardson.

The Northman (2022)

Amleth is a Norse prince denied his birthright. The king was killed by his treacherous brother, Fjölnir, who rode off with Amleth’s mother. Amleth himself barely escaped assassination, going into hiding and becoming a Viking. Yet try as he might to move on, he can not forget his oath to avenge his father’s death.

Years later, Amleth learns that Fjölnir has been usurped and now runs a remote farm in Iceland. Disguising himself as a thrall, he meets a slave named Olga, who claims to be a sorceress. Together, they plot their mutual revenge upon Fjölnir.

The Northman was a passion project for both star Alexander Skarsgård and director Robert Eggers. Both shared a love of Norse history and myth and sought to make an epic film based on the old Viking sagas. Collaborating with Icelandic poet Sjón, they ultimately decided to adapt Saxo Grammaticus’s Amleth. This 13th-century poem is best known today for inspiring William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

While barely making back its budget in theaters, The Northman did brisk business on VOD and in physical media sales. It was also a major hit with critics, who praised the adaptation of the classic tale and the intense action scenes. Eggers was satisfied with this, voicing his thoughts on the film’s reception in an interview with The Daily Beast.

“Am I disappointed that, three to four weeks in, we’re on VOD because that’s the way things are done in the post-COVID world? Yeah,” he admitted. “But it’s doing great on VOD, so there you go.”

Ballerina (2023)

Not to be confused with the 2025 film of the same name set in the John Wick universe, the 2023 Ballerina is much more disturbing. The South Korean action thriller centers around former bodyguard Jang Ok-ju. Her best friend Choi Min-hee ends her life, asking Ok-ju to avenge her. This sets Ok-ju against Choi Pro, the drug dealer and human trafficker whose extortion pushed Min-hee over the edge.

Ok-ju’s plan goes awry almost immediately. The good news is that her actions expose Choi Pro’s unapproved sideline in “weird pornographic movies” with drugged women to his bosses. The bad news is that they give Pro three days to make amends by killing Ok-ju and a student she liberated from their trafficking operation. This sets into motion an epic battle, as Ok-ju tries to take down Pro before he takes her out.

How we picked the best Action Movies on Netflix in 2026

Beyond the obvious qualifier of being available on Netflix in March 2026, there was only one rule for this feature. Any movie listed on it had to have intense action scenes. The setting was immaterial, allowing for fantasy films, historical epics, war movies, and crime thrillers. In this, we were also able to offer a wide variety of different action movies.
