‘Opulent’: Supergirl Director Details DCU Krypton & Kara’s Life on It

Craig Gillespie, the director of the upcoming superhero feature Supergirl, discussed what the DC Universe’s version of Krypton would look like in a recent interview. The fans got only a glimpse of Superman’s home world in the promotional material for Supergirl. However, the message that Clark Kent’s biological parents sent to him in 2025’s Superman also shed light on Kryptonian life and culture.

Craig Gillespie talks about the DCU iteration of Krypton

During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gillespie confirmed that Supergirl will explore the titular character’s (Milly Alcock) life on Krypton and the impact the planet’s eventual destruction had on her. “We do really thoroughly investigate Argo [Kara’s birth city] and Krypton,” the filmmaker said. “It’s so fundamental to who she is as a person and what she goes through in her formative years there. It makes you understand why she is where she is with her personality and the self-destructive nature that she has as we meet her at the beginning of the film.”

As Kara indicated in various promotional materials, Krypton’s destruction in the DCU didn’t happen in a day, unlike in other iterations. Gillespie noted that he drew inspiration for Krypton from the Superman movies of the ’70s and early ’80s. He also delved into the history of the character’s family.

The I, Tonya director explained, “Trying to build on what her status was on Krypton, her father being a scientist and in academia, and the connections that they had there, which made it interesting in terms of how opulent that world was.” Gillespie proceeded to tease that “people will be satisfied” with how the memories of Krypton will affect Kara and the movie’s narrative.

Ana Nogueira penned the script for Supergirl. The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll. The movie premieres in US theaters on June 26.
