Supergirl Director Breaks Down Kara Zor-El & Superman’s ‘Older-Sibling Dynamic’
In the build-up to the Milly Alcock-led Supergirl, director Craig Gillespie has provided an acute insight into the bond that the titular superhero will share with David Corenswet’s Superman in the movie. The seasoned filmmaker, who is helming the second theatrical outing in James Gunn’s revamped DCU, revealed that the two Kryptonian cousins will have an “older-sibling dynamic” in his film, while also shedding light on the characters’ motivations.
Craig Gillespie explains Supergirl and Superman’s bond in his DCU movie
As confirmed by the I, Tonya director, the upcoming Supergirl movie will see Kal-El play an elder brotherly figure to his cousin, Kara Zor-El.
“Even though they’re cousins, you get this almost older-sibling dynamic, and that can be adversarial at times,” Craig Gillespie told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she’s having to find a way and find herself.”
Gillespie also highlighted the sharp contrast in Superman and Supergirl’s personalities, stating that it primarily comes due to their disparate childhoods. “They have such different upbringings,” he said, adding, “Superman hasn’t gone through trauma. He came from a very loving family and was almost groomed to be in this role, whereas Supergirl has been through trauma, and the role’s kind of being pushed upon her at a later age, and she’s having to adjust to that.”
Instead of arriving on Earth as an infant like Superman, Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, spent her entire childhood on Krypton. However, before her planet’s destruction, Kara’s parents, Zor-El (David Krumholtz) and Alura (Emily Beecham), managed to send her to her cousin’s world before perishing with Krypton.
During the discussion, Craig Gillespie also teased the scene where Supergirl lands on Earth for the first time. “It was actually our first day out the gate. She just landed, so she doesn’t know English. So she’s out of the gate speaking Kryptonian,” he exclaimed.
Meanwhile, Supergirl will arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026.
