Supergirl’s Milly Alcock Says ‘I Get It’ on Martin Scorsese’s Superhero Movie Remark
Milly Alcock has a clear-eyed view of the superhero genre and the criticism that comes with it ahead of the release of Supergirl. As debates around comic book films continue, the actress says she understands why some legendary filmmakers like Martin Scorsese don’t connect with them.
Milly Alcock reflects on Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott’s opinions on superhero movies
Supergirl lead Milly Alcock addressed comments from filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott. Both veteran directors have publicly criticized superhero movies. Scorsese famously compared comic book films to “theme park films” while discussing the state of cinema. He suggested they lack the emotional and artistic depth of traditional filmmaking. Meanwhile, Scott was more blunt. He called superhero movies “boring as s–t” and added that “they aren’t any f—ing good (via Rolling Stone).”
Alcock doesn’t take issue with those views. “I get it. They’ve been around for fucking ever making phenomenal films,” she told Vanity Fair. “Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective.”
The actor also acknowledged the kind of scrutiny that comes with leading a major franchise. Reflecting on her experience after House of the Dragon, she said, “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on… I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is part of the new DC Universe led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The synopsis says, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice (via Variety).” The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa.
Supergirl is set to release in June 26.
