A24 has released another trailer for Backrooms, the upcoming horror movie based on an internet phenomenon and starring Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It is set to release in theaters on May 29, 2026.

What happens in the Backrooms trailer?

The trailer for the movie highlights Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character finding a mysterious part of a store that is a doorway of sorts for a seemingly unending maze of rooms. Ejiofor’s character tries to explain this to Reinsve, who doesn’t believe him. Later in the trailer, Ejiofor tasks Lukita Maxwell and Finn Bennett with coming with him as proof, and after seemingly going missing, the trailer ends with Reinsve entering the Backrooms herself.

The Backrooms originated as a 4chan creepypasta thread. The concept is that there are “wrong areas” of reality, also known as the Backrooms, that people can suddenly find themselves trapped in. These areas are typically portrayed as endless carpeted and monotoned rooms lit with fluorescent lights that emit a buzzing white noise effect. People can get lost in the Backrooms for long periods of time; however, there are also monsters that inhabit the liminal space.

The concept of the Backrooms quickly took off on Reddit following the initial thread. In 2022, Parsons started a series of Backrooms short films on YouTube, which then went viral and largely brought the concept into the mainstream. Severance creator Dan Erickson said that The Backrooms were one of his many inspirations when working on the Apple TV+ show.

In addition to Ejiofor, the cast of Backrooms includes Renate ReinsveMark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. The script comes from Will Soodik and Roberto Patino, while James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster.
