Fifty Shades of Grey’s Dakota Johnson Recalls Losing Role for ‘Crazy’ Reason
A small moment from an audition room turned into a surprising career story, as Dakota Johnson recently shared how a simple act of politeness appeared to cost her a role. The actor opened up about the incident and why it still confuses her.
Dakota Johnson says she failed an audition after people misunderstood her behavior
in an interview with Hits Radio, Dakota Johnson recalled a bizarre experience where basic manners backfired during a callback audition. She said she walked into the room, greeted everyone, shook hands, introduced herself, performed the scene, and left.
However, the feedback shocked her. “I had an audition once… I shook everyone’s hand and introduced myself… The feedback I got was that… I was pompous,” she said. Casting teams reportedly felt she was “schmoozing” and acting “full of herself,” which led to her losing the part.
Johnson admitted she didn’t see it coming. “I was like: ‘What?’… I didn’t get the job because they said that I was being cocky. But I just had manners… It was pretty crazy.” Her reaction appears to make it clear she still finds the situation hard to understand.
That odd setback didn’t slow her career. Johnson went on to land major roles, including her breakout performance as Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, opposite Jamie Dornan. The film turned her into a global name and opened doors to a mix of indie and mainstream projects.
Over the years, she has built a diverse filmography with titles like How to Be Single, Daddio, and Am I Okay? She has also stepped behind the camera, producing projects through her company TeaTime Pictures. Johnson has said she wanted more creative control after feeling disconnected from some finished films she acted in.
“I want more from this industry… more conversation and more creativity,” she explained, adding that sometimes she saw final cuts and felt they didn’t match what she imagined during filming (via Variety).
Looking ahead, Johnson is open to trying new genres. During a recent interaction with Variety, she expressed interest in playing darker roles, even a psychopath, and wants to take on action-heavy projects.
