Supergirl Unveils First Look at Kara Zor-El’s Dad
Supergirl‘s story on the big screen is expanding, as a new reveal gave fans a closer look at her family. The upcoming film has now introduced a key figure from her past.
David Krumholtz’s Zor-El in Supergirl gets first look in new image
A fresh image from the film showcases David Krumholtz as Zor-El, the father of Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock. The movie, set to release on June 26, marks the character’s live-action return in a major DC Studios project. Alongside him, Emily Beecham appears as Kara’s mother, Alura In-Ze, rounding out an important part of her family story.
Director Craig Gillespie spoke about casting Krumholtz and why he fit the role. He said, “I was thrilled. He’s a big comic book fan, which was awesome.” The filmmaker also highlighted how demanding the role was, noting the cast had to learn entirely new languages for the film. “So they had to learn a language. There’s some major scenes, like minutes and minutes of dialogue that they’ve got to work with. You really need actors of that caliber,” Gillespie continued (via EW).
Craig Gillespie also notes that the film will explore multiple planets. He estimates there are around nine distinct worlds, each with its own language. The story involves a lot of “traveling,” Gillespie says.
The film takes a pretty unique approach when it comes to tone and genre. At the center is Kara, who teams up with a young alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley. Together, they go after a dangerous villain named Krem, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts.
What really pushes Kara forward, though, is something personal. Her loyal super-dog, Krypto, gets poisoned early on, and the clock starts ticking. Saving him becomes a key motivation. In addition to the action or spectacle, the story carries a sense of urgency that gives the adventure more heart.
