Project Hail Mary Writer Apologizes After New Star Trek Is ‘S—‘ Remark
The author behind the year’s blockbuster sci-fi adaptation has walked back his blistering criticism of modern Star Trek. Andy Weir, the writer behind Project Hail Mary, issued an apology to executive producer Alex Kurtzman following a podcast appearance where he called recent Trek shows “s—.”

Weir took to Facebook with an open letter addressed directly to Alex Kurtzman. In the apology, the Project Hail Mary writer explained that his recent appearance on the Critical Drinker podcast spiraled beyond his intention. “I feel like my quotes were taken out of context as salacious sound bytes,” Weir wrote. “I hope you saw the other parts where I said how much I like you as a person and what a nice guy you are. Also how I like SNW and LD.”
The author admitted he was attempting humor during the interview. “I was trying to be funny, but in retrospect it comes off as disrespectful and mean. So I’m sorry for that,” he stated. Weir also clarified that his remark about his rejected pitch—“they didn’t like my pitch so f— ’em!”—was intended as self-deprecation rather than genuine bitterness.
During the podcast taping, he had praised Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as “pretty good” and Star Trek: Lower Decks as “entertaining and fun,” but he was far less kind toward the franchise’s other recent series. “I don’t like a lot of the new ‘Trek,’” Weir said at the time. “Those shows are s—.” He also revealed that Paramount had passed on a Star Trek pitch he had developed, adding, “They didn’t accept my pitch, so, you know, f— ’em.”
However, the Project Hail Mary writer concluded his apology with an invitation for dialogue. “If you want to talk about it in real time — even if it’s just to rip me a new one — I’m happy to hop on the phone or zoom,” he wrote. Adding that in a few months he would return to writing novels and “no one will care again.”
