Next Project Hail Mary Adaptation Revealed With Photo

Creators have revealed a new adaptation of Project Hail Mary, presenting another version of the story beyond its existing formats. Early details, including a preview image, suggest the project will revisit key moments. It may also expand on parts of the narrative not fully explored before.

Project Hail Mary to get a manga adaptation

The upcoming manga adaptation of Project Hail Mary is being developed by Hayakawa Publishing, with illustrations by Hajime Go and adaptation by Kazuko Onoda.

The story originates from the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, which Onoda previously translated into Japanese. A teaser image released online shows Ryland Grace encountering Rocky for the first time inside the tunnel between spacecraft.

The manga format can include story elements that the film adaptation reduced or excluded. The original novel presents detailed accounts of Earth’s response to astrophage, including extreme measures to slow global cooling, along with a deeper exploration of Rocky’s journey from Erid and Grace’s life before the mission. The film condenses these sections because of runtime limitations.

An early version of the film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, reportedly exceeded four hours, leading to significant edits. A multi-volume manga would not face the same constraints. It could depict additional sequences such as spacewalks on the Hail Mary and more detailed astrophage-related processes on Earth.

The manga may also expand on the autonomous probes known as the Beetles, named John, Paul, George, and Ringo. The film only briefly outlines their role, while the source material explains their function in delivering data to Earth and assisting spacecraft movement in greater detail.

Hayakawa Publishing confirmed that it will release the manga in Japan in 2026, although it has not announced a specific launch date. Andy Weir described the preview material as varied and engaging.
