The Oscars To Leave Hollywood in 2029
After more than two decades on Hollywood Boulevard, the Oscars is preparing to relocate in 2029, bringing its run at the Dolby Theatre to a close. The shift marks a significant change for the ceremony, as it moves toward a different venue in Los Angeles.
The Oscars to move from the Dolby Theatre to the Peacock Theater
The Academy Awards will change venues beginning in 2029, ending its long run at the Dolby Theatre and relocating to the Peacock Theater. The move is part of a long-term arrangement that will keep the ceremony at its new location through 2039.
The transition comes with a broader change to the ceremony’s distribution. After airing for decades on ABC, the Oscars will move to YouTube in 2029, where it will be made available via streaming. The same year will host the 101st edition of the awards. Meanwhile, the 100th ceremony in 2028 will remain at the Dolby Theatre.
The relocation comes from a partnership between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG, which operates the L.A. Live complex where the Peacock Theater is located. As part of this agreement, AEG will undertake upgrades across multiple areas of the venue. These include improvements to the stage, sound and lighting systems, and backstage facilities, along with updates to lobbies and other production spaces.
The two organizations are also expected to collaborate on “design elements needed to accommodate the Oscars ceremony.” Meanwhile, the L.A. Live campus will also play a role in the presentation of the ceremony. Its expanded plaza is set to host red carpet arrivals. The Peacock Theater also offers a larger seating capacity compared to the Dolby Theatre.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement, “For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. Live the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema, both for our live in-theater audience and for film fans around the world.”
