Forgotten LOTR Character Could Finally Appear in Shadows of the Past Movie

With news of The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s book are happy to see that the new cinematic adventure might include a beloved character.

What ignored LOTR character might appear in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past?

A new live-action Lord of the Rings movie is coming after The Hunt for Gollum. Peter Jackson announced that Stephen Colbert will help adapt the next LOTR movie for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Colbert will pen the story with his son, Peter McGee, and Philippa Boyens. Colbert will also work with Jackson and Fran Walsh to develop the movie.

Shadow of the Past will be based on the six chapters early on in The Fellowship of the Ring that Jackson did not develop for his LOTR trilogy. Colbert’s story is set between the third chapter, Three is Company, and the eighth chapter, Fog on the Barrow-Downs.

“I thought, ‘Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story,'” Colbert said in a video announcement. “Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?'”

By never developing those early chapters, Jackson’s movies did not include Tom Bombadil, a fan-favorite character in the books. Tom famously frees Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow and later saves the hobbits from the Barrow-wight on the Barrow-downs.

With Colbert developing these chapters, it’s safe to assume Tom Bombadil will finally make his live-action feature film debut. On the television front, Rory Kinnear famously appeared as Tom in Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

“Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure,” the official logline for Shadow of the Past reads. “Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”

The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past has no release date. However, it will be released after Andy Serkis‘ The Hunt for Gollum, which arrives in theaters on December 17, 2027.
