Tom Cruise has built a strong reputation for his on-set professionalism. The veteran star is reportedly highly committed to his roles and his work. Multiple directors and castmates have previously praised the Top Gun actor’s dedication to his craft.

Steven Spielberg, widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, shared similar views. The director collaborated with Cruise on two films, Minority Report in 2002 and War of the Worlds in 2005.

He spoke about working with Cruise during a keynote event at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, ahead of the release of his new film, Disclosure Day.

“Tom Cruise showed up every morning when I showed up,” Spielberg said of the Mission Impossible star, “I show up before the crew. So I get to the set sometimes at 6:30 in the morning.” He continued, “On Minority Report and on War of the Worlds, Tom would insist on getting there when I got there so we would map out the whole day … which was really helpful for me,” adding that the experience reflected a collaborative process.

Tom Cruise is known for his dedication to his work. The actor has also said that he aims to continually develop new skills while preparing for projects, believing it helps improve his performances.

“I will learn a skill, and I know eventually I’m going to use it in a movie,” Cruise said to PEOPLE in 2025, “whether it’s the piano or having more time to dance, or parachuting or flying airplanes or helicopters. The wonderful thing is you’re never there. It can always be better.”

Tom Cruise will soon appear in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger.
